J&K to likely to witness light to moderate rain, snow in coming days

Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness intermittent light rain and snowfall over the coming days, particularly in higher reaches, the Meteorological Department said on Saturday.


Kashmir is all set to be hit by feeble Western Disturbances in the coming days.


Kashmir witnessed two decent spells of snow during the Chilai Kalan, the Valley’s harshest 40-day winter spell, that ended on Friday.


MeT said the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy on Saturday, with light rain or snowfall over a few higher reaches towards night.


On February 1, the department predicted widespread cloud cover accompanied by light rain and snow in higher altitudes, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds at many places across the union Territory.


A brief improvement is expected on February 2, though light rain or snowfall may occur at isolated higher reaches during night hours. The cloudy conditions are likely to persist on February 3, with scattered to many places experiencing light rain or snow in the upper reaches.


From February 4 to February 6, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy, offering a temporary respite.


However, another weak western disturbance may affect the region on February 7, bringing generally cloudy skies with light rain or snowfall at a few places.


The Met department has predicted dry weather conditions from February 8 to February 10.


Meanwhile, minimum night temperatures across many parts of the Kashmir division remained 0°C and 2°C above normal, according to the Meteorological Department. In the Jammu division, night temperatures also stayed close to seasonal averages, ranging between 1°C and 2°C at several places.


The lowest minimum temperature in the Kashmir division was recorded at the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which settled at minus 6.5°C, while in the Jammu division, Bhaderwah recorded the night temperature at 0.6°C, the department said.


MeT said that the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a minimum of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius.


Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, registered minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, while the tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius.


In the north Kashmir border area of Kupwara, the night temperature settled at minus 0.3 degrees Celsius.
