Kargil Vijay Diwas and Kashmir

1 min read

This July between 24 and 26, the country is remembering the fallen soldiers of Kargil war and the government in this regard is organizing various functions across the country along side the various civil society groups. One of the major functions would be held in Kargil with Prime minister Narendra Modi attending the function as the chief guest.

Commemorating the 25th Vijay Diwas of Kargil war, the memories of the fallen soldiers are fresh into the minds of people who pay deep respect for their sacrifices. Over the years, the number of functions held across the country have grown multiple times especially after 2014 when the BJP led NDA took over in New Delhi.  Alone in Delhi, hundreds of functions are held during the month of July to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas by civil society groups.

The war took place in Kargil, a part of Jammu and Kashmir prior to 5 August 2019. It was separated from the region as a Ladakh Union territory after union government bifurcated state and downgraded it to two UTs followed by Abrogation of Article 370. The victory over the Pakistan in this war was all possible due to active support of locals in Kargil and in Drass area of Kargil division after locals noticed the suspected movement of Pakistan army in civvies and accordingly informed the Indian army.

Even the significant number of soldiers who paid with their lives in this war hailed from Jammu and Kashmir. However, there is no such functions held in Kashmir to educate and aware our young generations about this war and the contribution of these soldiers for our safe and secure future. Why there is no such function held anywhere in the colleges and Universities of Kashmir.

The government over the last five years have succeeded to ensure all functions at par with other states are held of national importance in Kashmir educational institutes. But it seems lacking the interest of holding such a crucial function in same institutes of Kashmir.

Let functions of such type be a part of curriculum and annual academic Calander in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure our coming generations imbibe the strong national values and patriotism in their hearts.
