In a tribute to one of Ladakh’s most revered war heroes, the union Territory administration will establish a memorial in Leh to honour Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd), Maha Vir Chakra awardee and the “Lion of Ladakh,” who passed away following a heart attack on Friday.
The memorial aims to enshrine his legacy of courage, leadership, and unwavering devotion to the nation.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, said the memorial will be constructed in Leh in consultation with the family, the Army, and local representatives.
“The memorial will stand as an enduring symbol of Ladakhi valour and pride. His bravery shall continue to inspire generations to come,” he said in a post on X.
Colonel Wangchuk, a decorated veteran of the Kargil War, breathed his last at his residence in Leh on Friday after suffering a major heart attack. Family members said he had been unwell for the past few days and had complained of chest pain.
Commissioned into the Assam Regiment in 1987, he was later deputed to the Ladakh Scouts—popularly known as the ‘Snow Warriors’—who played a pivotal role during the 1999 conflict. The regiment earned widespread recognition, including a Unit Citation from then Army Chief Ved Malik, for its exceptional performance.
Colonel Wangchuk was credited with leading one of India’s earliest victories at Chorbatla in May 1999, a feat that cemented his legacy as a symbol of courage and leadership in the face of adversity.
