At least 62 people have been hospitalized in Tokyo on suspicion of having suffered heatstroke after sweltering heat swept Japan, media said on Saturday.
Two of those hospitalized are in serious condition, public broadcaster NHK reported.
The Japanese capital saw temperatures soar to 35.4 degrees Celsius (95.7F) at noon on Saturday, its highest June 25 temperature since record-keeping began in 1875.
Japan’s highest June temperature on record was reported in the city of Isesaki, northwest of Tokyo, where temperatures rose to 40.2C.
Six Japanese prefectures have been put on alert. Authorities recommend that people stay at home unless absolutely necessary, drink enough water and avoid wearing face coverings unless in a crowded space.
