Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 PM on Monday amid protests by the opposition seeking a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach in the House last week.
As soon as the the House commenced its day’s proceedings at 11 am, the opposition members were on their feet, shouting slogans and demanding Shah’s statement on the “security lapse”.
The Speaker Om Birla tried to bring the House to order, but the opposition members continued to create a ruckus. Birla then adjourned the House till noon.
Within minutes of the resumption, the House was adjourned again, this time till 2 pm, as the pandemonium continued.
The members of the Opposition were seen holding placards with “Nation wants to know why no action against BJP MP Simha” written on them. “Why PM and HM are silent” and “Democracy under siege” read other placards.
Simha is said to have issued the security pass to Sagar Sharma, who was one of the two intruders to have jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors gallery on December 13. the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 terror attack on Parliament.
Speaker Om Birla spoke about the December 13 incident and said: “It is unfortunate that the issue is being politicised”
Stating that a high-powered committee has been constituted to look into the matter, he assured the House that a “concrete action plan” will be prepared for the future.
The responsibility of ensuring the security of the Parliament complex lies with the Speaker and Parliament Secretariat, he said.
However, the Opposition members continued to protest, despite Birla asking them not to bring placards into the House. Finally, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm.
