PM greets Gujarat and Maharashtra on statehood day, praises their role in India’s growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended warm greetings to the people of Gujarat and Maharashtra on their respective statehood days, lauding their rich cultural heritage and significant contributions to India’s development.

In separate messages posted on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the unique strengths of both states and their enduring impact on the country’s economic, cultural and social landscape.

Greeting the people of Gujarat on Gujarat Day, Modi said, “Warm greetings to the people of Gujarat on the special occasion of Gujarat Day. This day is a celebration of the rich history, vibrant culture and remarkable spirit of Gujarat. The state has made an outstanding contribution to India’s progress. The dynamic and enterprising nature of the people is noteworthy. May Gujarat continue scaling new heights of progress in the coming times.”

Extending his wishes to the people of Maharashtra on Maharashtra Day, he said, “Best wishes to my sisters and brothers of Maharashtra on Maharashtra Day. Maharashtra has a long history of social awakening, cultural richness and leadership across sectors. From literature, theatre, music and cinema to industry, education, science and public service, the state has made a lasting contribution to India’s growth. Praying for the continuous development of Maharashtra and the well-being of its great people.”

Both Gujarat Day and Maharashtra Day are observed on May 1 each year to mark the formation of the two states in 1960 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile Bombay State on linguistic lines, a significant moment in India’s post-Independence administrative reorganisation. The creation of Gujarat and Maharashtra reflected long-standing cultural and linguistic aspirations, and since then, both states have emerged as key drivers of the nation’s economy and cultural identity.

Gujarat has established itself as a major hub for industry, trade and entrepreneurship, playing a pivotal role in sectors such as manufacturing, petrochemicals and renewable energy. Maharashtra, home to the country’s financial capital Mumbai, continues to lead in finance, entertainment and higher education, while also maintaining a strong legacy in social reform and cultural movements.

‎The Prime Minister’s messages come amid nationwide celebrations marking the two statehood days, with cultural events, official ceremonies and public gatherings highlighting regional pride and achievements.

His remarks emphasising progress, cultural vibrancy and collective spirit echo the broader narrative of cooperative federalism and the importance of states in driving India’s overall growth trajectory.
