Police in an embarrassing move on Wednesday arrested Major Leetul Gogoi with a teenage girl in Srinagar hotel.
Gogoi who was in the news in 2017 for tying Farooq Ahmad Dar of Chill-Brass Budgam to a bonnet of the car allegedly for pelting stones to the security forces on Parliamentary elections day received an award by Ministry of Defence for his “valour” act after few months.
The move, however by the officer triggered a worldwide outrage and India was criticized globally for ‘violating’ human rights in Kashmir.
Gogoi along with a girl who is reported to be minor have been held by Khanyar police after a verbal brawl took place at Hotel Grand Mamta.
According to police sources the major was caught after he along with a Kashmiri girl and a boy reached to the hotel where he ahd boked the room.
Sources said that the verbal argument with the receptionist by major and his colleague promoted the hotel staff to complain to the police. While the heated argument was going on both the sides for a long time, it caught the attention of the locals who also entered into the hotel to ascertain the facts.
“We informed the police after the argument tuned ugly on which all of them were arrested. The boy and girl-both are hailing from Budgam,” said the police sources.
The police, however, said that the investigations are underway into the matter and facts are ascertained.
“The girl is not minor. We look into the facts and we have to go through the merit of the case,” said IGP, Police SP Pani.
He said the concerned unit of Gogoi has been informed about his arrest.
Meanwhile, the army has also launched an internal inquiry as how the officer has deserted his duty and reached Srinagar along with the girl. We are investigating how this happened. The officer was on duty officially, so it merits for the thorough inquiry.

IGP orders probe
IGP Kashmir has ordered a probe, to be conducted by the SP North Zone Srinagar, into the incident.
“This is in reference to the Press Release issued by District Police Srinagar which reported about the incident at the Hotel Grand Mamta today. In this matter, IGP Kashmir Zone has ordered a probe to be conducted by the SP North zone Srinagar in this incident within the ambit of law,” a statement issued by police said.
