5 killed in car-lorry collision in Kannur

Five members of a family, including a child, were killed after their car collided with a lorry in Kerala’s Kannur on Monday late night, police said.

All the deceased were passengers in the car.

According to police, the deceased were identified as C Sudhakaran (52), his wife Ajitha (35), his father-in-law K Krishnan (65) and Akash (9), son of Ajith (Ajitha’s brother), the family hailing from Bheemanadi near Chittarikkal in Kasaragod district. Car driver K. N. Padmakumar (59) of Kalichanadukam in Kasaragod. All of them died on the spot, and the body was kept at Kannur Medical College, Pariyaram, for a post-mortem.

The accident occurred around 2245 hrs near Punnachery petrol pump on Monday. The car was returning after joining Sourav, the elder son of Sudhakaran, in a college to pursue a Chartered Accountant course at Kozhikode, to their house, while the LPG-laden truck proceeding to Kannur collided with each other.

Another lorry proceeding to Kasargod side first hit the car, which led to losing control of the wheels of the car and then resulted in a head-on collision with the gas tanker lorry.

The car was fully damaged due to the impact of the accident, and the local residents, fire force personnel, and Kannapuram police recovered the bodies after breaking the doors of the car.

Kannapuram police registered a case in this connection and took into custody two drivers of the lorries, police said.
