Pulwama: National Conference leader Ali Mohammad Naik of Tral died this evening. The veteran leader breathed his last at around 8 pm today at his Srinagar residence.
Ali Mohammad has a long political career dating back to 1950’s when he was the General Secretary of then political movement “plebiscite front” (Mahaz-E-Rai Shumari). He was the General Secretary of Indian National Congress and contested successfully elections in 1967.
Under the regime of Ghulam Mohammad Shah he served as the Minister for Revenue, Education, and Fisheries.
He was also the Deputy speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly besides being elected as Member of Parliament.
Presently Naik was working as observer in J&K Legislative assembly. Naik survived a militant attack few years ago and suffered severe injuries.
Among several other lawmakers, Naik was the one who ditched Dr. Farooq Abdullah to topple his government by allying with Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad Shah. In return, Shah elevated him to the minster for revenue in his cabinet. He returned to NC in 1990 and was elected to assembly. However, in 1999 he defeated Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for Lok Sabha seat. His last rites would be performed at his ancestral home in Tral.
