National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha MP Ruhullah Mehdi on Monday alleged that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections were deliberately delayed in 2018 as part of a “conspiracy” to pave the way for the abrogation of Article 370.
Speaking to reporters in central Kashmir’s Budgam as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), Mehdi said, “The Constitution clearly states that elections must be held within six months of a seat falling vacant or the Assembly being dissolved. But when the Assembly was dissolved in 2018, this government delayed the polls, which was both illegal and unconstitutional.”
He further claimed that the purpose behind this delay was to ensure that no elected Assembly was in place, so that Article 370 could later be abrogated “through the backdoor” with just the Governor’s signature.(KINS)
