Noted Kashmiri academician Agha Ashraf Ali passed away late last night in Srinagar.

Ashraf Ali, 98, worked tirelessly for many decades for the education of people of Kashmir. He is believed to responsible for the education revolution among Muslims in Kashmir.

He was a renowned public orator and spoke on history, education and politics.

At the young age of 28, he was appointed the inspector of schools in 1951. He later took job as Principal, National Extension Training Centre, to train village-level workers.

In 1960, he got a Fulbright fellowship and went to the USA for his PhD. He was later appointed as the first Chairman of the Board of School Education.

After his retirement, Agha Ashraf delivered lectures in universities, colleges and schools.

In 2002, Ali was offered a seat of the Member of the Legislative Council. However, he refused to accept it.

Agha was the father of the late poet Agha Shahid Ali.

His death has been widely condoled.

  • Jammu: Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir NN Vohra has condoled the death of eminent educationist of Kashmir Agha Ashraf Ali and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family.
