PM hails scientists, says technology driving India’s self-reliance on National Technology day ‎

‎ ‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings on National Technology Day, recalling the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests as a defining moment in India’s scientific journey and asserting that technology continues to play a central role in building a self-reliant nation.

‎In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Indian scientists and researchers whose efforts led to the successful nuclear tests at Pokhran on May 11, 1998, during the tenure of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

‎“Greetings on National Technology Day. We recall with pride the hard work and dedication of our scientists, which led to the successful tests in Pokhran in 1998. That landmark moment reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment,” Modi said.

‎Highlighting the growing importance of technology in national development, the Prime Minister said innovation and research were helping transform multiple sectors while creating new opportunities for citizens.

‎“Technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India. It is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the nation’s growth across sectors. Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research and creating solutions that serve both national progress and the aspirations of our people,” he added.

‎National Technology Day is observed annually on May 11 to commemorate the successful conduct of Operation Shakti, a series of nuclear tests carried out in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. The day is also recognised as a celebration of India’s scientific achievements and technological advancements.

‎The observance assumes significance as the centre continues to emphasise initiatives related to digital infrastructure, indigenous manufacturing, semiconductor development, artificial intelligence and startup-led innovation under the broader vision of an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.
