Rahul Gandhi targets PM over 'Sacrifice' Appeal, calls it proof of governance failure

‎ ‎Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the government of shifting the burden of economic challenges onto ordinary citizens and alleging that repeated calls for public “sacrifice” reflected failures in governance.

‎In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi criticised remarks attributed to the Prime Minister advising people to limit certain expenditures and consumption patterns amid ongoing economic concerns.

‎”Modi ji on Sunday asked the public to make sacrifices — don’t buy gold, don’t travel abroad, use less petrol, reduce consumption of fertilisers and edible oil, travel by metro, and work from home,” Gandhi said.

‎Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, alleged that such appeals were not policy guidance but indications of deeper economic problems facing the country.

‎”These are not suggestions — they are proof of failure,” he wrote.

‎Stepping up his criticism of the BJP-led government, Gandhi claimed that the Centre was increasingly placing responsibility for economic hardships on citizens instead of accepting accountability for policy decisions.

‎”In 12 years, the country has been brought to such a stage that people are being told what to buy and what not to buy, where to go and where not to go. Every time, the responsibility is shifted onto the public so that the government itself can escape accountability,” he said.

‎The senior Congress leader also took a direct swipe at the Prime Minister, stating, “Running the country is no longer within the capability of a compromised PM.”

‎The remarks come amid heightened political sparring between the Congress and the BJP over economic management, inflation, employment, and rising household expenses.

Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the Centre of failing to address concerns related to fuel prices, cost of living, and unemployment, while the government has maintained that its policies are aimed at ensuring long-term economic stability and self-reliance.
