PM Modi, Saudi Crown Prince discuss West Asia situation, stress energy security and safe shipping routes

‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on the escalating situation in West Asia and its wider implications for regional stability and global energy security.

‎In a post on X, Modi said the two leaders exchanged views on the ongoing conflict and emphasised the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure. “Spoke with Crown Prince and PM of Saudi Arabia, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman and discussed the ongoing conflict in West Asia,” he said.

‎The Prime Minister reiterated India’s firm stance against attacks on energy facilities, which have emerged as a key concern amid rising tensions in the region. “I reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on regional energy infrastructure,” Modi noted.

‎Both leaders also underlined the need to maintain stability in vital maritime routes that are crucial for global trade.

“We agreed on the need to ensure freedom of navigation and keeping shipping lines open and secure,” he said, highlighting concerns around key corridors such as those linked to the Gulf region, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

‎India, which imports a large share of its crude oil from West Asian countries, has consistently called for de-escalation and the protection of critical supply chains, particularly as disruptions could have far-reaching economic consequences.

‎Modi also expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s continued support for the Indian diaspora in the kingdom, one of the largest expatriate communities in the region. “Thanked him for his continued support for the welfare of the Indian community in Saudi Arabia,” he added.

‎The conversation comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, with concerns over attacks on energy infrastructure and risks to maritime security prompting global calls for restraint and cooperation among regional powers.
