Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India would work to strengthen multilateralism, promote sustainable development, and build a more inclusive world order during its chairmanship of the BRICS grouping this year.
In a post on social media platform X after interacting with Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation from BRICS nations, Modi said the grouping had emerged as a significant platform representing the interests and aspirations of emerging economies and the Global South.
”Glad to interact with Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation of BRICS countries,” the Prime Minister said.
”BRICS has emerged as an important platform for advancing cooperation among emerging economies and giving voice to the aspirations of the Global South,” he added.
Modi said India’s presidency of the grouping would focus on strengthening cooperation among member nations amid growing global economic and geopolitical challenges.
”Under India’s Chairmanship this year, we will work together to strengthen multilateralism, promote sustainable development, enhance economic resilience and build a more inclusive world order,” he said.
The remarks came as New Delhi hosted the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, bringing together senior diplomats from member countries to deliberate on key international and economic issues confronting developing nations.
The 2026 BRICS Summit and associated meetings are being held under the chairmanship of India, which assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2026.
Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS grouping has expanded in recent years with the inclusion of new members, increasing its geopolitical and economic influence. The bloc has consistently positioned itself as a platform advocating reforms in global governance institutions and greater representation for developing countries in international decision-making bodies.
India has repeatedly emphasised the importance of the Global South in shaping international discourse, particularly on issues related to development financing, climate justice, food and energy security, and equitable economic growth.
