Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp political attack on the Narendra Modi-led Centre, accusing the government of systematically “stealing” the rights, opportunities and resources of different sections of society, and alleged that the country was being run like a “chor bazaar” instead of a government.
In a strongly worded post shared on his WhatsApp channel, Gandhi posted a graphic carrying the slogan, “Narendra Modi sarkar nahi, chor bazaar chala rahe hain!” (Narendra Modi is not running a government, but a thieves’ market is running the government. The post listed a series of alleged “thefts” under the BJP government, including “vote theft in elections,” “paper leaks in examinations,” “theft of forests from tribals,” “theft of MSP from farmers,” “land theft from the poor,” “snatching of OBC share,”and “data theft in the US deal.”
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha further said in the post, “Is khuleaam ho rahi chori se desh ko bachane ki zimmedari desh ke yuvaon ki hai aur main unke saath khada hoon,” asserting that it was the responsibility of the country’s youth to save India from what he described as open loot and that he stood firmly with them.
The attack comes amid an increasingly aggressive campaign by the Congress against the BJP-led Centre over issues ranging from alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and unemployment to caste census, reservation policies and the Adani controversy. Gandhi has repeatedly accused the government of favouring select corporate interests while undermining democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards.
The Congress leader’s reference to “vote theft” appeared to be linked to the Opposition’s continuing allegations over the functioning of the Election Commission and electoral processes, while the mention of “paper theft” echoed the party’s criticism over recurring examination paper leak controversies that have triggered protests among students and job aspirants across several states.
His remarks on tribal forests and farmers’ MSP also align with Congress’ sustained attacks on the Centre over land acquisition policies, forest rights and the legal guarantee for minimum support price demanded by farmer organisations during and after the prolonged farm law protests.
The BJP has consistently rejected such allegations, accusing the Congress of spreading misinformation and pursuing divisive politics after repeated electoral defeats. The ruling party has maintained that the Modi government has strengthened welfare delivery, expanded infrastructure, increased transparency through digital governance and worked for the upliftment of marginalised communities.
Rahul Gandhi has, however, intensified his outreach towards youth, farmers, Dalits, tribals and OBC communities in recent months, positioning the Congress campaign around issues of social justice, economic inequality and institutional accountability.
