The Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday reiterated that India has been continuously supplying energy products to several neighbouring countries as part of ongoing regional cooperation.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed supplies to Bangladesh through the high-speed diesel friendship pipeline, adding that additional requests from Dhaka had also been met.
“We have been supplying energy products to countries in the neighbourhood. I do not have all the facts with me right now, but I have spoken about this earlier as well. We have been supplying diesel to Bangladesh through the high-speed diesel friendship pipeline. We also received additional requests from Bangladesh, which we have met and continue to meet,” he said.
While speaking in detail regarding the scope of those arrangements at a press briefing, he said that India has been consistently supplying energy products to Bhutan under “existing arrangements,” as well as to Nepal.
“India has supplied energy products to Sri Lanka, and some arrangements are currently being worked out with Mauritius as well,” Randhir Jaiswal said.
India is also exploring further energy cooperation with Mauritius, the MEA said.
On fertiliser cooperation, Jaiswal confirmed that Nepal has requested for the supplies, which are currently “being processed under existing bilateral framework of cooperation.”
When pressed further on India’s energy sourcing approach, Jaiswal made clear that New Delhi’s calculus goes beyond market conditions alone.
“I’ve already said this on several occasions. A broad approach to energy sourcing remains what it was. As I have said before, we take into account in this imperative the need to meet the energy needs of 1.4 billion people. As well as the market conditions and global situation that are obtained. Our national interest remains the underlying factor for sourcing our energy needs.”
India’s approach, the MEA reiterated, is guided by balancing domestic requirements with international commitments. “We are not dependent on a single source of energy. We work to ensure diversified supply while keeping national interest as the core factor,” Jaiswal said.
The ministry emphasized that India’s broader energy strategy focuses on diversified sourcing to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion population while maintaining stable regional partnerships.
