Rain, snow likely in Kashmir during next 24 hrs: MeT

Rain lashed most parts of Kashmir valley on Monday even as Meteorological centre predicted more rain or thunderstorm at scattered places while snow is likely over higher reaches during the next 24 hours.


Rain or thunderstorm are very likely at scattered places on Monday while light to moderate rain or Snowfall over higher reaches is likely with main activity expected to take place during April 17(night)-18, the MeT office said.

It said during this wet spell, thunderstorm with strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 20-30Kmph and Hailstorm is also possible at some places of Jammu and Kashmir, while there could be intermittent light to moderate rain during April 19 to 21.

There is also possibility of temporary disruption of surface transportation especially over hilly and snowbound areas during April 17-18 and wet weather can cause waterlogging in low lying areas besides damaging Orchards, the MeT office said and added that day temperature could fall 5-6 degree Celsius during the period.

Srinagar and its adjoining areas were lashed by rains this morning causing considerable drop in temperature. The sky is partly to generally cloudy at most places.


Regarding the rainfall, the MeT office said Srinagar received 3.9mm, Qazigund had 0.8mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 3.5mm, Kupwara 5.4mm, Kokernag traces and Gulmarg 10.8mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 0830hours today.


Srinagar recorded a low of 10.7 degree Celsius against 10.9 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 2.8 degree Celsius above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.


The Maximum temperature was 1.7 degree Celsius below normal against 21.1 degree Celsius in Srinagar.


Qazigund recorded a low of 8.8 degree Celsius against 7.8 degree Celsius which was 2.3 degree Celsius above normal the gateway of Kashmir while tourist hot spot of Pahalgam recorded a low of 5.5 degree Celsius, 2.1 degree Celsius above normal.


Kokernag 8.2 degree Celsius, Kupwara 8.7 degree Celsius and ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir had a low of 3.5degree Celsius on Monday, the MeT office sai
