Russia nuclear power giant Rosatom will begin constructing two nuclear reactors in Hungary in the coming weeks, Hungary’s foreign minister said.
The 2014 deal between Moscow and the EU state will take place as Russia’s nuclear industry has not been subjected to European Union’s sanctions over the Ukraine invasion. It will expand the existing Paks nuclear plant.
Hungary has not been unconditionally supportive of moves to isolate Moscow over oil and gas, a BBC report said.
The Paks site currently generates 40 per cent of Hungary’s electricity supply, which is expected to double with the new reactors operational by 2030. “Let the construction begin!” said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in a Facebook post.
The $12.4 billion project is largely financed by Russia.
