Relations between Russia and the United States are currently at their lowest point, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said.
“They are (at) the lowest point. It’s not me describing them that way. That’s our authorities… and it’s gruesome,” Pankin told reporters at the UN when asked to characterise relations between the two countries under US President Donald Trump.
At the same time, he said direct contacts between the two countries’ presidents in Anchorage were fruitful.
“The direct contacts between our presidents, (the) Russian and US president(s), were quite fruitful. But in Anchorage, probably the difficulty is that there is no predictability. You can hear one thing in the morning and another thing to the contrary in the evening or the action next day, contrary to both. So the high unpredictability is the biggest problem,” Pankin said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump held talks in Alaska on August 15, 2025. The meeting took place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage. The presidents discussed ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Both leaders described the meeting positively. After the summit, the Russian president said it was possible to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and emphasised Russia’s interest in a long-term settlement.
