In a major development, two bitter rivals of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party– Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone and Apni Party Altaf Bukhari– have agreed to attend the meeting called by Dr Farooq Abdullah to discuss permission granted to non-locals living ordinarily to vote in Jammu and Kashmir.
Spokesperson of Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Alliance (PAGD) and General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Mohammad Yousuf Targami told UNI that the meeting would be held on Monday, August 22, at 11 am.
“I have been told that Dr Abdullah spoke to them personally and they have agreed to attend the meeting on Monday,” Targami added.
NC President Dr Frooq Abdullah on Thursday called for an all-party meeting to discuss allowing non locals living ordinarily to vote in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was called an hour after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said she contacted Farooq Abdullah and requested him to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the future strategy.
NC said Abdullah spoke to the leaders of political parties and requested them to attend the meet.
“Dr Farooq Abdullah has invited leaders of all political parties for a meeting to discuss the recent announcement by the J&K govt regarding inclusion of non-locals in the voter lists. He personally spoke to the leaders & requested them to attend the meet at 11 AM on Monday, Aug 22,” NC spokesman said.
The Chief Electoral Officer on Wednesday announced that about 25 lakh non-locals can cast their vote during the forthcoming state assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir which sparked resentment from several major political parties.
