Sarfaraz Ahmed likely to become Pakistan Test head coach

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is set to be appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s Test team, with a formal announcement expected shortly, Geo News reported on Wednesday.

Sarfaraz, who recently served as a mentor of Pakistan’s Asia Cup-winning Under-19 side, is expected to begin his tenure during Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series against the Bangladesh national cricket team in May.

The post of Pakistan Test head coach has been vacant since October 2025. Azhar Mahmood had served as interim head coach during the recent series against South Africa national cricket team.

Pakistan are scheduled to play two Tests against Bangladesh beginning May 8, with the second match starting on May 16. The series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2027 cycle.

Geo News further reported that Sarfaraz is currently working with Pakistan Shaheens, who are touring the United Arab Emirates for a T20 and one-day series against the England Lions.

Sarfaraz is famous for his leadership record, having captained Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, where they defeated India by 180 runs in the final.

He recorded a 70 per cent win rate in ODIs as captain and guided Pakistan to five wins in nine matches at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
