Second leg of J&K Assembly session begins amid protest by BJP MLAs over NLU, NC members raise Middle East crisis

The second leg of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session on Friday commenced nearly after more than a month break amidst protest by the Bhartiya Janata Party legislators over the demand of establishment of National Law University (NLU) in Jammu.

The legislators were demanding a response from the government on the matter.

As soon as the House proceedings started, the BJP MLAs carrying placards on ‘National Law University’ raised the issue in the House and demanded a response from the National Conference headed government.

The opposition legislators staged a protest inside the Legislative Assembly, demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu.

However, the National Conference MLAs also raised the issue of the ongoing Middle East crisis and condemned the attack on Iran.

The BJP MLAs raised slogans while seeking clarity from the government on the proposed location of the university claiming that Jammu has long been deprived of premier educational institutions and called for an immediate decision.

The opposition members raised slogans in the House thus briefly disrupting the normal business.

Later speaking to reporters outside the House, the BJP MLAs claimed that the government has outsourced 24,000 jobs in an “unemployment” hit region of Jammu and Kashmir.

They said that the government has not come clear on its stand on establishing the National Law University in the Jammu region.

“We will keep raising the issue inside the House as well as outside unless there will be no clarity from the government side,” the BJP MLAs said.

On the Middle East crisis, they said, “it is not in the domain of the J&K Legislative Assembly and the National Conference members are raising it only to divert attention from our demand.”

However, the BJP MLAs also clashed with the Congress MLA when the latter allegedly passed some remarks against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House.

The National Conference (NC) members also staged a protest outside the Legislative Assembly expressing solidarity with Iran amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

“We stand in solidarity with Iran. The entire National Conference and the J&K government stand together.

As Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had earlier condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, we are here today united. I have given a call attention and moved an adjournment motion,” NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq said to the media outside the House.

The second leg of the nine-day Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Session commenced today and will conclude on April 4.
