The Srinagar Municipal Corporation recently claimed that it is almost on the verge of completing the Smart City Project. The project to create modern facilities and expand the infrastructure as per the existing requirements was sanctioned by Union government worth Rs 3000 crores.
A lot of work was done and the city was significantly reshaped with improvement in footpaths, roads and other basic necessities. The drainage system was also rebuilt and expanded to other new areas. However, unfortunately with a rainfall on Monday, the system got exposed with waterlogged streets turning the scenes of cesspool.
It was shocking and surprising for the people especially those tax payers as what happened to their money and how infrastructure is being built with poor urban planning and major engineering flaws. The entire smart City project merits for a probe and thorough investigations since one of the major claims earlier BJP made that regional parties who remained in power alternatively siphoned huge money otherwise meant for the developmental works.
If the smart City project is being questioned and it’s work doesn’t address the woes of people, the people deserve an answer as what has happened to this money. The money sanction for it was not little but massive to rebuild and reshape it. If one gets a thorough check, nothing significant is changed on ground except few facelifts at certain crucial places.
