Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, met him at Jodhpur jail, marking their first meeting since his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26.
Angmo’s visit yesterday came a day after the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the Ladakh administration in response to her petition seeking Wangchuk’s immediate release.
She was accompanied by lawyer Ritam Khare during the visit.
After the meeting, Angmo shared on X that they had received a copy of the detention order, which they plan to challenge through legal means.
She added that Wangchuk’s “spirit is undaunted.”
“His spirit is undaunted. His commitment resolute. His resilience intact. He conveys heartfelt thanks to all for their support and solidarity,” Angmo posted on X.
Earlier, on Saturday, Wangchuk was visited in jail by Mustafa Haji, legal adviser to the Leh Apex Body, and the activist’s elder brother, Tsetan Dorjey.
In his first message from jail, Wangchuk said he was “prepared to remain in jail” until the authorities ordered a judicial inquiry into the deaths of four men during the September 24 protests in Leh. He also reiterated his call for a non-violent agitation for Ladakh’s statehood.
Wangchuk was detained under the stringent NSA on September 26, two days after the protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status turned violent, leaving four people dead and over 100 others injured.
