Spain secured a spot in the round of 16 in the ongoing UEFA Euro 2024 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Italy at the Arena AufSchalke, thanks to an own goal by Riccardo Calafiori early in the second half.
Both teams fielded familiar lineups following their opening victories. Spain’s only change saw Aymeric Laporte return to the center of defense, while Italy kept the same side that rallied to beat Albania.
Spain’s Nico Williams was a constant menace down the left flank, creating early opportunities, including a headed chance for Pedro Gonzalez Lopez that was expertly saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Williams missed a golden opportunity in the tenth minute, heading wide from close range. Spain continued to dominate, with Donnarumma making crucial saves against Alvaro Morata and Fabian Ruiz. Italy, struggling to penetrate Spain’s defense, relied on Federico Dimarco’s runs down the left, but found little success.
At halftime, Italy brought on Bryan Cristante and Andrea Cambiaso to gain control, but Spain remained in charge. Pedri missed another clear chance from a Marc Cucurella cross. Spain’s persistence paid off when Williams’ cross, flicked by Morata, resulted in Calafiori’s own goal, as Donnarumma’s deflection proved insufficient.
Spain continued to apply pressure, with Donnarumma tipping over another Morata shot and Cambiaso clearing off his own line. Lamine Yamal narrowly missed curling a shot in, while Cristante’s cross into Spain’s box highlighted Italy’s sporadic threats. Williams almost scored again, hitting the crossbar with a powerful shot from the left.
In the dying minutes, Italy attempted to rally, but Cristante’s flick was easily gathered by Spain’s goalkeeper, Unai Simon. Spain could have widened the margin, but Donnarumma thwarted substitute Ayoze Perez twice in added time.
Williams was a standout performer, consistently threatening whenever he had the ball. His solid defensive play and offensive creativity were fabulous, as he created the goal and nearly scored himself. It was an outstanding individual display that helped secure Spain’s place in the round of 16.
