The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir experienced the coldest day on Tuesday in the month of June in at least 48 years, an independent Kashmir weather observatory said.

Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius today, which is the coldest June day since at least 1975.

The temperature remained 14.2 degrees below the normal during this period of the season, while 15 degree Celsius is common in the month of February, he added.

However, there was no confirmation from the Srinagar MeT office.

Intermittent rains coupled with cold conditions continue to lash the Kashmir Valley, resulting in considerable drop in day temperatures on Tuesday.

The MeT forecasts widespread moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms with gusty winds over the Jammu division and widespread light to moderate rain or snow over the Kashmir division between 4 pm and 6 pm.
The weather is likely to improve from Thursday, the weather office said.
Kashmir Weather, an independent observatory, has also predicted “light to moderate snowfall is very likely over the upper reaches, especially during the night”.
It also said “most places in Kashmir valley will stay below 18 degrees Celsius and some areas may experience the coldest day of the season”.
The maximum temperature in the Valley stayed several degrees below normal, ranging between five to 13 degrees across the region, prompting people to wear warm clothes, including woolens and jackets.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 18.2 degrees, which was 10.2 degrees below the average. Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 20 degrees, which was 7 degrees below normal.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was coldest in the Valley with a high of 8.6 degrees and a low of 4.6 degrees.
