Left student organisations and student wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday protested against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme.
Hundreds of activists gathered near ITO metro station holding placards where they demonstrated against the newly launched recruitment scheme into the defense services and demanded that it should be scrapped.
The protesters sat in between the old Delhi Police headquarters and the Gate No 5 of the ITO Metro and raised anti-Agnipath slogans.
However, as the numbers grew, the security personnel, including CRPF, removed the protesters from the site. Many were detained by the Delhi Police.
The gate no 5 of the metro station was shut by the security forces in wake of the protest.
Rohit Lakra, Chief of AAP student wing, said the government is playing with the life of aspirants.
“Only to hide their failure on employment front, the government has put out a contract scheme. Youth want to serve lifelong, not 4 years. This arbitrary scheme should be rolled back,” he added.
The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday approved the ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces. The youth selected under this scheme will be known as ‘Agniveers’. About 46,000 of them will be recruited this year.
