A delegation of Trinamool Congress, including MP Saugata Roy on Thursday met the Election Commission of India (ECI) and submitted a memorandum over alleged attack on its party workers by people affiliated to BJP under Surma Assembly constituency, where bye-elections will be held along with three other seats in Tripura on June 23.
The TMC also demanded immediate action against the perpetrators besides ensuring free and fair polls.
In its memorandum submitted to the poll panel, the TMC said, “A systematic violence was planned and inflicted on the workers of the TMC on June 15 in Tripura by ‘goons’ affiliated with the BJP. The sole purpose is to vitiate the atmosphere before the bypolls.”
“This is not the first time that BJP goons unleashed violence on workers and leaders of the TMC. Similar violence was inflicted during the run-up to the Tripura Local Body elections in November 2021,” the party said.
Attacking the ruling BJP in Tripura, the TMC said, “The state machinery acted in ‘cahoots’ with the goons in order to influence the results of the polls.”
An hour after joining TMC as many as five people including a three-year-old child were injured seriously after they were allegedly attacked by people affiliated with the BJP at Kathalbari village under Surma constituency in Dhalai district on Wednesday night.
Three of the injured persons have been shifted to Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) at night following the deterioration of their condition.
