US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington will continue the war in Iran for at least for “a little while longer,” saying that the US’ overall goal was to “neuter” the Islamic Republic militarily for a “very, very long time.”
Asked on the “Benny Show” podcast about rising gas prices due to the war, Vance, commenting on the US progression in Iran claimed that Washington had “accomplished the vast majority” of its military projects, and further remarked that they had virtually all been achieved.
“The President’s going to keep at it for a little while longer to ensure that once we leave, we don’t have to do this again for a very, very long time,” Vance said, though acknowledged that the US gains may not be long-term, as Iran could very well retain its lost military capabilities, sometime in the late future.
“This country is threatening us in all these ways. They’re still trying to build a nuclear weapon. We need to neuter them for a very, very long time, and that’s the purpose,” he added.
Noting the rising gas prices, and difficulties in maritime energy transit, Vance acknowledged the troubles, though sidelined as a short-term, albeit strong effect, calling it a “very temporary reaction to what is going to ultimately be a short-term conflict.”
“We’re not interested in being in Iran a year down the road or two years down the road. We’re taking care of business. We’re going to be out of there soon, and gas prices are going to come back down,” he added.
Vance has been mostly sceptical about the US’ move to directly enter the war despite displaying full support to the administration’s reasoning, and has lately been emerging as the key contender to playing the role of lead negotiator with Iran, should Washington and Tehran fully resume diplomacy.
