J&K: Snowfall in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg; rains lash Kashmir plains

Date:

Kashmir’s popular hill resorts — Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg and several high reaches experienced fresh snowfall over the past 24 hours, even as the plains witnessed intermittent rainfall.

The fresh spell of snow has led to the closure of key highways, including the Srinagar–Leh highway, which has been shut for vehicular movement.

Officials said the Gurez–Bandipora road has also been closed due to snowfall, adding that travelers have been advised not to undertake journeys without confirming the latest road status from the respective district control rooms.

The Meteorological Department today said that isolated light rain or thundershowers are likely over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, while mainly dry weather is expected thereafter.

The MeT said the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district received 7.6 cm of snow, while the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 2°C.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district recorded 2.1 cm of snowfall, while the minimum temperature settled at minus 0.4°C, the MeT department said.

The plains of the Valley, including Srinagar, were lashed by rains, officials said. Srinagar recorded 8 mm of rainfall, Qazigund 12.2 mm, Pahalgam 16.2 mm, Kupwara 14 mm, Kokernag 21.2 mm, and Gulmarg 10.2 mm during the past 24 hours, according to the Meteorological Department.

With snow in the upper reaches and rains in the plains, Kashmir is bracing for colder nights ahead.
