Trump administration officials Witkoff, Kushner to hold consultations with Qatari officials, but no meeting with Iran

Date:

Senior Trump administration officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be in Doha today for holding consultations with Qatari mediators on a range of regional issues, including the ongoing US-Iran negotiations, though there will be no direct high-level meeting between Washington and Tehran, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said the discussions would cover regional developments, including Lebanon and the diplomatic process involving Iran, but stressed that the American delegation was not in Qatar for direct negotiations with Iranian officials.

“Mr Steve Witkoff and Mr Jared Kushner are here in Doha to meet with mediators, with Qatari officials, and the talks will be around all regional issues… including, of course, negotiations with Iran, but also including Lebanon,” Al Ansari said. “They are not here for their negotiations with the Iranians.”

The remark follows comments by US President Donald Trump, who announced on Monday via Truth Social that a new meeting with Iran would take place in Doha.

“Iran has requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha!” Trump wrote in his Monday post.

Iranian officials, however, have denied that any such talks will be taking place at this time, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei saying there are be no meetings scheduled with the US “at any level” in the coming days.

“We will not have any negotiation meetings at any level with the American side in the coming days,” Baghaei said, adding that while Iran was dispatching a technical delegation to Qatar this week, the visit had “no relation” to the presence of American officials.
