Kupwara: An encounter is underway between militants and security forces in Handwara’s Shartgund Bala area of this frontier district Kupwara since early morning.
According to sources, two to three militants are believed to be trapped. Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the area.
Authorities have suspended the Internet services in the Kupwara district “as a precautionary measure”. Schools and colleges have also been closed in the district.
Meanwhile, clashes have erupted near the site of the gunfight with youth pelting the forces with stones which responded by firing tear gas.
Several protesters were reportedly injured in the clashes which were going on at the time of filing of this report.
Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir witnessed polling for the second phase of urban local body polls yesterday. While Jammu recorded impressive turnout, voting was low in the valley.
