ACB files chargesheet against Naib Tehsildar, Patwari in bribery trap case

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu & Kashmir has filed a charge-sheet against a Naib Tehsildar and a Patwari posted in Baramulla district for their alleged involvement in a bribery case, officials said on Friday.

The accused—Altaf Hussain Khan, then Naib Tehsildar, Uri, and Pardeep Kumar, Patwari Halqa, Uri—were booked in connection with an FIR registered against them by the ACB Baramulla.

According to ACB, the case stems from a complaint filed by a Uri resident on September 11, 2023. The complainant alleged that the officials demanded Rs 10 lakh, later reduced to Rs 1 lakh, for providing necessary revenue documents related to a 10-marla land purchase and house construction amid a dispute with the seller.

Acting on the complaint, ACB conducted a verification and subsequently laid a trap. During the operation, Altaf Khan was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. The tainted money was recovered on the spot, and he was immediately arrested.

Investigations have also established the involvement of Patwari Kumar, based on evidence gathered during the probe, ACB said.

After completing the investigation and obtaining prosecution sanction from the Jammu & Kashmir government, the ACB filed the chargesheet before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Court, Baramulla, under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The court has listed the case for further proceedings on May 2.

Officials added that this is the seventh chargesheet filed this year by ACB Baramulla in corruption-related cases.
