Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading fast bowler, was forced to leave the field early on Day 2 of the ongoing Sydney Test due to a suspected injury.
The incident occurred during the post-lunch session, prompting the 29-year-old to seek medical attention.
Footage showed Bumrah leaving the stadium shortly after, with reports suggesting that he may undergo scans to assess the injury’s severity. Prior to his departure, Bumrah had bowled eight overs, claiming the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne, and had just started a new spell when he was taken off.
At the time of the injury, Bumrah had bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests in the series, with only Australian pacer Pat Cummins (152 overs) having bowled more. His heavy workload has raised concerns about the risks of overbowling, especially given the team’s reliance on his pace attack in the absence of other key bowlers.
Bumrah’s stellar form in the series has been evident, having taken 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.06, leading the wickets chart. His performance has matched Harbhajan Singh’s record for the most wickets by an Indian in a single Test series against Australia.
Rohit Sharma, speaking at the end of the Boxing Day Test, had acknowledged the risk of overbowling Bumrah and emphasised the importance of carefully managing his workload.
This injury scare follows a previous concern during the second Test in Adelaide, where Bumrah had received attention for discomfort near his groin area but was able to continue bowling.
India and cricket fans will now be hoping for a quick recovery for their star pacer as the team aims to maintain their momentum in the series.
