The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Srinagar resident in connection with the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, officials said.
The suspect, identified as Shafat Ahmad of Ishber Nishat, was taken into custody for his alleged role in the high-profile abduction.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the CBI regarding the arrest.
Rubaiya, then a medical intern, was abducted on December 8, 1989, in Srinagar—just six days after her father assumed charge as Home Minister in the V.P. Singh government. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) claimed responsibility within hours through a call to a local newspaper.
She was released five days later after the Centre agreed to free five jailed militants.
The case was later taken over by the CBI. Rubaiya is a key prosecution witness and, in 2022, identified the jailed JKLF chief Yasin Malik and three others as her abductors before a Special TADA court
