Cold wave set to intensify across J&K amid ongoing chill

Cold conditions returned across Kashmir as night temperatures dropped sharply once again, a day after parts of the Valley witnessed a brief improvement in minimum temperatures.

According to the latest data by Meteorological Centre, the summer capital Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.2°C, slipping from 3.0°C the previous night.


Tourist resort Gulmarg saw mercury plunge to minus 5.4°C, compared to minus 1°C recorded earlier, while Pahalgam registered minus 4.4°C, down from minus 2.2°C the previous night.

The cold wave conditions intensified in several other areas as well. Sonamarg resort in central Kashmir emerged as the coldest place, recording a bone-chilling minus 7.3°C.


Pulwama and Shopian in south Kashmir recorded minimum temperatures of minus 3.8°C and minus 4.0°C, respectively.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara settled at minus 2.0°C, while Ganderbal recorded minus 1.5°C. South Kashmir’s Qazigund registered minus 1.8°C, Kokernag minus 0.7°C, and Kulgam minus 0.5°C.

Kashmir witnessed a brief respite from the dry spell on Sunday as the higher reaches received widespread light snowfall, while rain lashed the plains, coinciding with the onset of Chillai Kalan, the coldest phase of the Valley’s winter.


MeT said weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir are likely to remain mainly dry till Friday.
