Congress claims rising inflation and weak farm activity reflect economic mismanagement

Date:

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday launched a fresh attack on the Narendra Modi government, alleging that its “anti-people policies” were pushing India towards an economic crisis and accusing the Centre of failing to address mounting inflation, slowing agricultural activity and rising unemployment.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Ramesh said the Congress had repeatedly cautioned the government over the country’s worsening economic situation in recent months but claimed those warnings had gone unheeded.

“The Modi government’s anti-people policies are steadily pushing the country towards an economic crisis. The Congress party has repeatedly warned the government about this over the past few months,” he said.

Citing recent economic indicators, the Congress leader alleged that wholesale inflation had touched a 44-month high of 9.87 per cent, fuel and electricity prices had surged by 27.4 per cent, and agricultural sowing had fallen to its lowest level in three years.

“The common people are reeling under rising inflation and unemployment, while the country’s farmers are suffering from the dual impact of the government’s flawed policies and adverse weather conditions. The increase in inflation has also significantly raised production costs for industries,” Ramesh said.

He further alleged that the government was ignoring serious warning signs in the economy and was more focused on managing public perception than addressing the underlying issues.

“At a time when all the fundamental indicators of the country’s economy are on ‘red alert’, the Modi government, instead of addressing the situation, is busy creating headlines to divert public attention,” he said, alleging that the Centre was attempting to hide the severity of inflation rather than taking effective measures to control it.

Describing the latest wholesale inflation data as a reflection of the government’s economic failures, Ramesh questioned its priorities amid growing financial distress across different sections of society.

“The latest wholesale inflation data is a glaring testament to the Modi government’s flawed economic policies and its failure. When every section of society is struggling, where have the government’s priorities disappeared?” he asked.

Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, Ramesh said, “Prime Minister, the country is demanding answers from you on inflation. After 12 years in office, you alone must answer for this economic failure.”

The Congress has repeatedly criticised the union government over inflation, unemployment and the state of the rural economy, arguing that rising prices of essential commodities, fuel and electricity have placed an increasing burden on households and businesses. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre has, however, maintained that it has taken multiple steps to contain inflationary pressures and preserve economic stability despite global economic headwinds.
