Islamabad, April 18 (UNI) The courts work for 24 hours, said Pakistan’s Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Monday while slamming Imran Khan for questioning why the courts were open at midnight on the day he was ousted as the Prime Minister.
“We don’t care about what is being said on social media; we are the protector of the Constitution,” he said while chairing a five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court.
According to Dawn, the Chief Justice also questioned why the Supreme Court should deal with political matters when its decisions are criticised at gatherings of “10 to 15,000 people”.
His comments come days after Imran publicly asked the judiciary on what was the need to keep its doors open at midnight on April 9, hours before he was ousted from the Prime Minister’s Office via a no-confidence motion against him in the National Assembly.
Both the SC and Islamabad High Court had opened their doors beyond their notified timings on April 9.
Without naming anyone, the CJ said, “The court fulfills its constitutional responsibilities. National leaders should defend court decisions.
“We are cursed for doing our jobs and protecting the Constitution. Why should the court get involved in your political matters?”
“Protecting the Constitution is our responsibility. We will fulfill our responsibilities. The court works 24 hours. No one has the need to raise a finger on the court proceedings,” he added.
