DCW issues notice to North MCD over Bhalaswa landfill fire

New Delhi, April 29 (UNI) Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal on Friday issued a notice to Commissioner of North Delhi Municipal Corporation over fire at Bhalaswa landfill and asked to appear before the Commission on May 4.
The DCW chief also asked for fixing accountability for the fire raging at the landfill site.
The Commission in a statement said the incident has damaged many houses in the vicinity of landfill site which has left several women and children homeless, thereby rendering them vulnerable to crime.
Seeing the severity of the matter, the DCW said it has issued a notice seeking complete details regarding the steps taken by MCD till date for clearing the landfill along with the expenditure made in the past 15 years on the same.
The Commission has also sought copies of all complaints filed by the local residents in the past 5 years about landfill related issues along with detailed action taken reports of the same, it said. .
It has also asked to produce complete details regarding steps taken by MCD to study the social, health, economic and environmental impact of the landfill on the nearby residents and the action taken against the officers responsible for the current tragedy.
The Commission has also asked for details of compensation disbursed by MCD to the people whose houses and properties have been damaged in the fire.
Meanwhile, Maliwal said, ” This is a man-made tragedy. It’s extremely unfortunate that the people living there are suffocating and many women and children have become homeless. Stringent action must be taken against those responsible for the tragedy and the people who have suffered must be compensated.”
