The death toll from the latest US strikes on Iran has risen to 17, with more than 100 people injured, according to Hossein Kermanpour, head of the Iranian Ministry of Health’s press service.
Kermanpour had earlier reported that 14 people were killed and 78 others injured. In an update posted on X late Friday, he said the air attacks on six Iranian cities on July 8–9 left 115 people injured, including two women.
“Fourteen operations were performed, 102 people received medical care and were discharged. Unfortunately, 17 compatriots died, one of them a woman,” Kermanpour said.
The US military launched at least 170 times in two days starting from Wednesday.
The US Central Command said the action was carried out in response to Iran’s alleged attacks against commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian forces later conducted retaliatory strikes against US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, while Tehran accused Washington of violating a ceasefire memorandum.
US President Donald Trump subsequently said the ceasefire between the United States and Iran was no longer in effect but talks are on. On Wednesday evening, the United States carried out another round of strikes.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is in Oman to discuss the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has once again slowed following the recent US-Iran strikes. Mediators have been working to get talks between the US and Iran on track amid the tensions.
Senior US officials said Washington expects Tehran to issue a statement soon that the strait is open and commercial vessels won’t be attacked.
