Srinagar: A fierce gunfight started between the security forces and militants’ late Saturday evening in Handwara town of North Kashmir.

Police sources told The Legitimate that two to three militants during search operation fired upon the forces in Bhawan village of this border district during the search operation, triggering an encounter.

“The area has been cordoned off and the fire fight is going on,” sources said.

The operation is jointly conducted by the Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and 21 Rashtriya Rifles. However, the special Para troops are also deployed in the operation owing to recent killing of the Lt Colonial in an encounter in Kupwara district.

Sources said that they believe the militants of Lashker-E-Toiba are part of the fleeing group which has recently infiltrated from Pakistan and are attempting to come down to the plains ahead of snowfall.

Massive firing from both sides was going on when the report was filed.
