Veteran lawmaker and CPI(M) leader Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami on Friday urged in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, to give clarity on the powers of Lt Governor and Chief Minister.

The confusion, he said, left members uncertain about their authority in legislative matters.

“Now we have a popular government, but we do not know which powers and authority the Chief Minister can exercise,” Tarigami said while speaking during the motion of thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s address “This needs clarification, and the LG, Chief Minister and administration must sit down and decide who exercises which powers, so we can approach them accordingly.”

The LG repeated in his address that “my government” means LG’s government.

“So let him present the report card of five years. At the very least, you could have shared some figures-such as the number of people from Jammu who visited the secretariat in Srinagar and vice versa ? Perhaps you won’t disclose the exact number of people recruited, but you could at least reveal how many were dismissed without notice due to alleged legal violations by their forebears.”

The CPI(M) MLA claimed that media, including top newspapers in the region, were directed on the exact size and placement of the Lieutenant Governor’s photo on the front page-even down to specific colour guidelines.

Speaking on the resolution passed in the house on the restoration of special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Tarigami said that “as a member of this House and a common citizen, I don’t think what the Supreme Court of India passed the judgment on the Article 370 has rendered justice to me”.
