Preventive evacuation being activated in Srinagar, south Kashmir to avert any untoward incident: Div Com Kashmir

With continuous heavy rains swelling rivers and tributaries across Kashmir, authorities have placed all departments on high alert as the fear of floods resurfaces, reminding residents of the devastating 2014 deluge.

Administration and the residents in Kashmir anxiously monitored water levels of the Jhelum River.

“Since 2014, when one floor of our house remained submerged for nearly a month, we have lived in constant fear,” said Shabir Ahmad, a resident of Jawahar Nagar Srinagar.

“With the rains swelling rivers and streams, we worry the Jhelum could breach at any time.”

According to the I&FC Department, the Jhelum was flowing above the danger mark at Sangam in Anantnag and Ram MunshiBagh in Srinagar on Wednesday, raising alarm in downstream districts.

“The water level is rising steadily. The rising waters submerged several villages in south Kashmir, forcing the evacuation of more than 2,500 residents to safer locations, officials confirmed. “We urge people, particularly those living close to water bodies, to remain alert and follow official advisories,” said Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a virtual meeting with officials and directed the administration to intensify ground response. “Adequate stock of rations, fuel, medicines, and drinking water must be ensured in vulnerable areas. Emergency medical teams should be on standby, and timely evacuation must remain the top priority,” Abdullah said.

Health Minister Sakina Itoo also directed doctors and paramedics to remain present in hospitals round the clock in view of the flood threat.

Meanwhile, a senior government official told Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) that both divisional administrations in Jammu and Kashmir are on high alert. “Control rooms are active, rescue teams are deployed, and people are advised not to panic but to remain vigilant and follow government advisories,” the official said.

Over the past several weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has faced incessant rainfall, triggering flash floods, landslides, and widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas. While assessments of damage are ongoing, authorities reassured that all possible measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property.

As we saw continuous rains from yesterday, especially in South Kashmir, water levels have been increasing and are still showing an upward trend. A review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary of J&K decided to take preventive and precautionary measures. Accordingly, preventive evacuation in some areas of Pulwama, Anantnag, and Kulgam has been initiated, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir said.(KINS) Ishtiyaq Kar
