National Conference Vice President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that for better relations, Pakistan has a responsibility to establish better relations between the two countries.
Omar said this while replying to a question over reports that Indian cricket team’s may not travel to Pakistan to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy early next year.
“What is new in this? Both countries have not played bilateral series for many years, it is BCCI’s own decision not to go for the tournament. If better relations are to be made between the two countries, then it is Pakistan’s responsibility too to play a role in creating such atmosphere’, Omar told Media persons in Srinagar on Thursday.
” I have always said that it is not only our country’s responsibility to establish better relations between these two countries, if better relations are to be made then it is Pakistan’s responsibility too”, the NC leader said.
The NC leader said the kind of attacks that are happening in Jammu and Kashmir should not happen.
“The kind of atmosphere that is there should not be there. Pakistan will also have to play its role to create an atmosphere of peace so that the relations between the two countries improve”, Omar said.
The former chief minister urged the government not to postpone the election due to the spurt in attacks in Jammu region as it would mean bwoing before forces behind such incidnets.
“There is no normalcy here, but is the situation worse than 1996. If the situation is worse than 1996 don’t conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir. If you have to bow before the forces (militants) who are carrying strikes, don’t hold elections. If you have to prove the supremacy of militancy instead of the supremacy of Army and Police, don’t conduct elections. If you don’t have the guts and react like a faint-hearted, don’t hold elections,” Omar said.
“But if there is a supremacy of our Army and police and the rulers have guts, why should they bow before these forces? Elections must take place and should be held on its own time so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will decide about the government”, Omar said.
