A week after resigning from Peoples Conference, former legislator Khurshid Alam on Saturday rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party.

Alam resigned from the PDP in March 2021 and rejoined the party in the presence of party chief Mehbooba Mufti.

Mufti said she was happy that Alam had returned to the PDP.

“I am confident the party will become more stronger,” she said.

Earlier, Alam said the PDP was his home.

“In 2021, I made the decision ( to leave PDP), seeking new perspectives and experiences. However, over the past few years, it has become increasingly clear to me that the core values and long-term vision I hold align more closely with the PDP,” he said at the gathering

He said one of the key factors in his decision to return to the PDP is the unwavering resolve of its President, Mehbooba Mufti.

“Throughout the trying circumstances of recent years, she has faced relentless harassment and unimaginable hardships. Despite being rendered homeless and even enduring the desecration of her father’s grave, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to the people of Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti continues to speak truth to power, advocating for the rights and well-being of our people, despite knowing the might of the establishment she stands against,” Alam said.

“My return to the PDP is driven by a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to support Mehbooba Mufti in her mission,” he added.

The former trade union leader Alam had joined the PDP after retiring from government service. He was one among the politicians arrested on August 5, 2019 when centre abrogated Article 370 and 35 A besides dividing Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories (UTs). Alam resigned from the PDP in March 2021 and joined the Peoples Conference headed by Sajad Lone. On July 12 Alam resigned from the PC.
