Fresh WD likely to trigger rain, snow over J&K: MeT

A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to trigger rain and snow at many places in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, officials said on Monday.

Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecasts light rain and snow at scattered places from Monday night to the afternoon of Tuesday.

The weather will remain partly cloudy with light snow over isolated higher reaches on February 28, while it will be generally cloudy with the possibility of light rain or snow at scattered places on February 29, it said.

There is a possibility of moderate rain or snow at most places, with heavy to heavy rain/snow at a few middle and higher reaches during March 1 in the late evening/night to March 3 afternoon, the MeT office said.

A few places may experience thunder, lightning, or hailstorms accompanied by gusty winds during March 1–2.

The Met office has also issued an advisory for tourists and travelers, stating that they should plan their trip accordingly and follow the administration traffic police advisory in view of heavy to very heavy snowfall over a few middle and higher reaches.

It has also warned the general public residing in hilly areas not to venture into avalanche-prone and sloppy areas. There are chances of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at a few places.

Farmers are advised to withhold irrigation and other farm operations during the first week of March, it said.

The MeT office said the minimum temperature during the intervening nights of Sunday and Monday in Srinagar slipped down to -2.0°C against the 0.5°C recorded the previous night. It was 3.5°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The night temperature at Gulmarg improved but remained the coldest place, with a low of -9.0°C against -10.0°C the previous night. It was 5.8°C below normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.

The mercury at the tourist resort of Pahalgam dipped to -7.0°C against -6.0°C the previous night, and it was 3.5°C below normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National had a low of -2.2°C against the -1.6°C, and the Picnic spot Kokernag in south Kashmir settled at -2.8°C against the -3.8°C recorded the previous night.

Kupwara also witnessed a drop in the minimum temperature, recorded at -3.5°C against -3.0°C, and it was 3.5°C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district on Sunday, the MeT office said.
