GCC will support UAE amid Iranian missile strikes, says Secretary General

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Jasem Albudaiwi said that the organisation will support all steps taken by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to protect its security.

On Monday, the UAE Defence Ministry said that the country’s air defence intercepted 12 ballistic missiles and four drones, which were allegedly launched from Iran, and noted that it reserves the right to retaliate.

In addition, the press service of the government of the Emirate of Fujairah reported a fire in one of the oil zones after a drone attack.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported, citing an Iranian military source, that the US military was behind the arson attack on an industrial oil zone in the eastern UAE.

“His Excellency underlined the GCC’s full and steadfast solidarity with the UAE, standing as a united front in support of all measures taken to protect its security, safeguard its sovereignty, and preserve the safety of its vital facilities,” the organisation said in a statement on Monday.

At the same time, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the new round of military escalation in the Middle East and called for a cessation of further tensions.

Saudi Arabia also supported Pakistan’s “mediation and diplomatic efforts to achieve a political solution that will prevent the region from sliding further into instability.”

Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman condemned the Iranian strikes and expressed support for possible UAE actions to ensure the country’s security, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

According to the report, Mohammed bin Salman held a telephone conversation with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan following Monday’s attacks on UAE territory.
