Girl arrested for murdering 14-year-old sister in J&K,s Ganderbal

Police in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir have arrested a teenage girl for allegedly murdering her 14-year-old younger sister.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad, today said the accused had tried to mislead the police by suggesting that her sister was abducted and later killed by unknown men.

The district police chief said the investigation and forensic analysis found that the shocking murder of the Sehpora girl was carried out by none other than her elder sister, who has been formally arrested in the case.

The minor’s body was found near her home at Shepora Ganderbal on Sunday morning, sparking anger and protests in the area.

Following the outrage, police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and registered a case at Kheer Bhawani police station under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Forensic teams also collected samples from the crime scene.

Addressing a press briefing, the SSP Gancderbal said that initial reports suggested the victim had been abducted, but during investigation, several discrepancies were found in the elder sister’s statement.

” After the recovery of the body, the scene of crime was preserved, and the body was shifted to hospital for post-mortem. A board of doctors, including forensic experts, was constituted to cover every aspect,” Ahmad said.

He said CCTV footage from the victim’s house and the road leading to the crime scene contradicted the version given by the elder sister.

“During sustained questioning, it was found that the elder sister had changed her clothes at her cousin’s house, and the recovered dress bore blood stains. Interestingly, plucked hairs of the accused were found in the deceased’s hands,” SSP Ahmad revealed.

The officer said that upon further interrogation, the elder sister admitted to killing her sibling after an altercation.

“In a fit of rage, she picked up a wooden rod and hit her younger sister on the head. When she fell unconscious, the accused struck her again, killing her on the spot. The weapon of offence was later recovered in presence of a magistrate and forensic team,” he said.

The SSP added that the accused tried to mislead investigators with a story of abduction, but technical data and forensic evidence nailed her involvement.

“This is a gruesome crime committed by a family member. The accused has been arrested and produced before court. We are ensuring the investigation is foolproof, with full videography, forensic corroboration, and magistrate supervision, so that the guilty is punished,” Ahmad said.

“The crime occurred due to a minor altercation between the sisters. Unfortunately, tempers flared and it ended in tragedy,” the SSP said.
