India began their campaign in the 2024 Asian Women’s Handball Championship with a hard-fought 31-28 victory over Hong Kong China on Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi Arena here on Wednesday.

The win was powered by stellar performances from Bhawana Sharma and Menika, with the latter also being named Player of the Match.

The Indian women’s team started the match strongly, with Priyanka Thakur, who played a pivotal role in India’s historic win at the 2022 Asian Women’s Junior Handball Championship, scoring their first goal. Soon after, experienced player Menika added to the tally, giving India an early advantage.

India’s defense was equally impressive, with skipper Diksha Kumari leading from the front. A SAF Games gold medallist, Diksha displayed her defensive prowess by saving three penalties in the first half, ensuring India maintained a solid 16-10 lead at the break.

Bhawana Sharma, who was also awarded the Best Player title at the 2022 Junior Championships, continued to impress, contributing significantly to the win.

Elsewhere, Kazakhstan stunned handball giants the People’s Republic of China, securing a 28-26 win. The match was defined by a standout performance from goalkeeper Zhannat Aitenova, who thwarted every Chinese attempt at goal. Japan also recorded an easy 34-14 victory over Iran, with centreback Kaho Nakayama leading the charge.

In the final match of the day, reigning champions the Republic of Korea defeated Singapore in dominant fashion, 47-5. Winger Jiyeon Jeon was named Player of the Match for her contribution to the victory.
